Rinchen Choesang Terrific, eerily atmospheric drones that build tension so skilfully that the track's hour goes by without seeming to linger too long, as so many longform drone tracks do.

„Rückzug“ by Compest started as a long hybrid ambience, combining muted synth sounds, a bit of distortion and with a tanpura drone. While working with the sounds, more and more elements offered themselves to be added to the flow of the piece. The tanpura becomes more active, industrial sounds, bells, voices, and after a while a flute become part of the mix. Therefore “Rückzug”, German for “retreat” may be a misleading title, as it rather reflects development and not reduction. But this translation would point in the wrong direction. “Rückzug” also means contemplation, a retreat inward. The long track can be seen as a meditation, offering a journey via different stages of perception and concentration. For the output of Compest, this is a rather controlled and monolithic release, perhaps most comparable to “Zittern” or to the “Heimat” set, where StillStand, Conscientia Peccati and Monoid were combined in variations of ambience.
