This 16-minute composition in 6 parts for guitar and keyboards opens a trilogy of mini-CDs with instrumental music by Poembeat. “Mind” presents beautifully melancholic ambient music. No repetitive beats here, instead the skilful guitar work provides subtle pulses that hold the music together, yet never betray its touching fragility. The short tracks segue into each other like scenes from a dream or a dream-like surreal film.

After having created music around recordings of spoken poetry for a previous album, in this new phase of his work Poembeat now lets his titles tell a story. As the “Mind” wanders from a state of “GRACE” (the title of the first track) through the backwards-guitar psychedelic interlude of “InBtween” to the cheerful chords of “HOPE” (possibly the only major chords on the whole CD!) and “Solution”, we feel that this music is about a possibly difficult change of situations, and the closing track “Afraid” indicates that the hope might have been deceptive. So stay tuned for the continuation of this sound story on the next Poembeat release … The second track “Last train” deserves special mention on our label so much dedicated to creating music from ambient sounds and field recordings, because here it’s the other way round: it’s the arpeggiated guitar and some feedback that invokes the scraping of metal on metal as freight trains pass in the night. Programme music is alive and kicking, and this is a release that may delight experimental music buffs and admirers of classical guitar work alike.

BAD ALCHEMY

Zwischen 'GRACE' und 'HOPE', Gnade und Hoffnung, lässt POEMBEAT auf seinem Mind (ACM 1016, 3" CD-R) das Bewusstsein - die Seele? - erzittern. Man muss ja weiter rudern. Und etwas Schönes ist Gnade genug.
