Re-Drum aka Russian artist Pavel Aleshin claims that his music sounds like “a broken AM radio in the heart of a ghost city,” and this album goes a long way to substantiating this claim. The sound quality is not at all broken, but very clear. Yet the slow drift of long, sustained electronic sounds reverberating in what could be imagined as empty passageways, certainly invokes a deserted nocturnal cityscape or, as one title claims, “night in a dead Lunapark.”

Contrary to what might be expected from these statements and also from Re-Drum’s earlier releases of deep drone/noise soundscapes, the music on “eclipse” does not have a particularly scary edge. It may convey a certain sense of yearning and melancholy, but the overall feel is one of warmth and calm contemplation. And there is indeed quite a lot to contemplate in these four compositions, all about 10 to 15 minutes long. While the music makes full use of the psychedelic potential of repetitive microtonal drones, in other layers of the composition there is also a lot of interplay going on between sampled acoustic instruments and undecipherable ambient noises. Great music for a state of wide-awake trance.

BAD ALCHEMY

Pavel Aleshin, der sich als RE-DRUM (Re-DrUm) mit einigen Veröffentlichungen beim slovakischen Label Black Orchid Prod. hervorgetan hat, vertieft seine mit Antumbra (2012) geknüpften AC Bande mit eclipse (ACR 1030, CD-R). Der Russe zeigt die Welt wie durch die Augen von Vampiren oder von Geistern. Eine nächtliche Welt, eine überschattete und verfinsterte Welt, in der der Schatten vom Mondlicht herrührt. 'Die Blume' blüht und bebt in einer wie von Wind und Regen überrauschten Szenerie, ein Frauenmund flüstert russische Poesie. Böen lassen die Dröhnwellen erzittern, für Melancholie ist es einfach zu ungemütlich. Erst die letzten Mollharmonien verbreiten ein elegisches Feeling. 'a Moon Piece' versetzt einen mit Grillengezirp, rituellem Gesang und unchristlichem Glockengeläut eine Handvoll Zeitzonen nach Osten. Das Läuten verschwimmt zu einer fahlen, pulsierenden Welle, die von metalloid geharftem Missklang übertönt wird. Zuletzt erklingt noch einmal der fernöstliche Mönchsgesang. 'Night in a dead Lunapark' lässt wieder nur noch den Wind durch eine entleerte Szenerie geistern und dröhnen. Die Dröhnwelle erinnert ein wenig an Obertongesang, der wie in einer großen leeren Halle pfeift und dabei ins Stocken kommt. Mit trappelnden Hufen kreuzt eine Herde hin und her. Wie im Jurassic Park auf der Flucht vor einem der großen Carnivoren. Als 'How long...' lässt Aleshin zuletzt einen orgeligen Halteton als sonore Dröhnwelle langsam mäandern, mit diesmal eher sehnsuchtsvoller als dystopischer Ausstrahlung. Ich würde mich nicht wundern, wenn Re-DrUm, richtig gesprochen, sich wie ReDrOMMMM anhört.
