This double album is an experiment in scale and time. For “expose,” EMERGE reworked some very short pieces from his earliest work as Dependenz, with a view to creating two hour-long pieces. The result is stunning in its variety: While one side has the grainy, laminar quality of other work by EMERGE, the other is a tour de force of odd rhythms created from found sounds.

EMERGE presents two very different approaches to the source material. The rhythmic aspects are even akin to his earlier work as Dependenz, but here he allows the rhythms to become much more prominent. The fact that the beats never actually settle into a straight meter lends them a certain uneasy, shifting quality similar to the effects achieved in early tape-based minimal music by manipulating tape speeds. This is an exciting new departure in EMERGE’s work that compliments but in no way denies his textural aesthetics.
